What is BOTOX®?
Botox® is a muscle relaxer that is most commonly performed in North America as a cosmetic procedure. BOTOX® comes in the form of a purified protein and is traditionally injected into facial muscles, causing them to relax rather than contract. Muscle contractions are what cause the lines, or wrinkles, on our faces.
More Than Smoothing Wrinkles
In our office, BOTOX® is used for therapeutic purposes, such as easing chronic facial pain and the intensity of muscle contractions. Dr. Fateh may also use BOTOX®to treat TMJ disorders, Gummy Smiles, jaw clenching, and teeth grinding.
BOTOX®—The Process
Botox® is injected into muscles that tense up. BOTOX® blocks some of the transmitters in the muscles, preventing them from contracting and essentially causing them to relax. Botox® injections are performed without anesthesia because it is virtually painless. Only a very small sting is felt when the injections are made. The effects are not permanent and may need to be repeated two to three times per year to retain the effects. Research has suggested, however, that long term use of the injections leads to a longer duration of each treatment’s effect. Patients over the age of 65 may not experience as dramatic of results. Botox® is only useful in treating expression lines and cannot be used to repair sagging skin caused by aging.
Why Choose a Periodontist for BOTOX®
Periodontists have had more advanced training in the oral and maxillofacial areas than most general physicians. The face is where we spend our time every day! In addition to extensive education related to the face, our daily in-office experience ensures our proficiency in facial injections as well as our first-hand knowledge of facial-muscle function.
Is BOTOX® painful?
The needle that is used to inject BOTOX® is extremely small, and its sting is minimal. The entire process is almost painless, so no anesthesia is needed, and our patients are usually awake during treatment.
